Chilton County 911 received a call at approximately 6:15 a.m. on May 7 regarding a gunshot wound. On the call, it was determined an 80-year-old male was en route to Ascension St. Vincent’s Chilton hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm.

The man stated on the call that he was struggling with his daughter, who suffers from mental health issues, over a gun, and during the altercation it was discharged and he was struck in the arm.

Chilton County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the location where the shooting took place, and upon arrival, found a female deceased on the floor. Investigators were on the scene collecting and processing evidence when the statement from the Chilton County’s Sheriff’s Office was released just before noon on May 7.

“This is an active investigation, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available,” Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon said in the statement from the CCSO.

On May 10, updates from the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office said it believes the gunshot victim was attempting to stop the deceased female from harming herself. This resulted in a struggle for the firearm where the male was shot in the arm, followed by him leaving the scene for medical treatment and the female turning the firearm on herself. The gunshot victim is expected to make a full recovery.
