Weather put a damper on some of the action during the week of March 29-April 4, but that did not stop some Chilton County high school baseball teams from making a late season push for a spot in their respective state championship tournaments.

 

Isabella High School

After a three-game skid prior to spring break, Isabella High School bounced back after the break with three wins during the week starting on April 1 against Verbena High School, winning 4-1. Seven of the nine Mustang batters recorded a hit — eight singles and a Tyler Mims double. Colton Conway and Austin Porter threw seven innings and combined with four hits, one unearned run and eight strikeouts. Conway had six of the strikeouts, and Porter accounted for none of the hits.

The Mustangs and Central of Coosa County High School’s AHSAA Class 2A Area 6 game was postponed on April 2 due to weather, but Isabella hosted Central Coosa on April 4 for a doubleheader. Isabella swept both games, starting with a 13-1 win in game one in five innings. Eli Boatwright was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Porter and Conway each had a home run. Mims threw five innings with one hit, one unearned run and six strikeouts. The Mustangs powered to a 19-5 win in game two behind a 2-for-4 effort from Boatwright at the plate, and he, Porter and Aiden Gray combined for 12 strikeouts on the mound.

 

Maplesville High School

Maplesville High School’s only game of the week on April 1 resulted in a 15-2 win over Westminster School at Oak Mountain. The Red Devils had 12 hits as a team with Aiden Abbott leading with way going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Truett Smith followed with a 2-for-3 effort with a double and three RBIs, and Braden Atcheson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Red Devils’ April 2 game with Fayetteville High School was canceled due to weather.

 

Billingsley High School

Billingsley High School had its doubleheader on April 2 with Alabama Christian Academy canceled for weather, and the Bears dominated the doubleheader on April 4 with AHSAA Class 1A Area 7 rival Autaugaville High School. The Bears took game one 18-5 and ended the game in two innings. Mason Truesdale and Nathan Gilmore each had three RBIs, and Landon Jones, Hudson Manning and Turner Motley combined for six RBIs.

In game two, Billingsley ended the game in two innings again with an 18-1 win with 14 RBIs as a team, with Kyle Boice, Gilmore, Eli Manning, Hudson Manning, Motley and Truesdale combining for 12 of them.

 

Chilton County High School

Chilton County High School traveled to Oxford for a tournament at Choccolocco Park from March 29-30. The Tigers face Lauderdale County High School in their first game, falling 10-5. Four runs in the fifth inning from CCHS took a 5-4 lead, but Lauderdale County answered with the game’s final six runs to win. Eli Dale, Colton Brock and Stephen Cromer were all 2-for-4, and Garrett Lawley and Cromer each had two RBIs. Oxford High School defeated Chilton County 7-4 in their second game on March 29 with Brody Pierce leading the Tigers going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Logan Coppedge added a 2-for-3 effort with a double.

CCHS took its first win of the tournament to open March 30, a 10-0 win over Faith Christian School. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead after the third inning, and then broke open for five runs in the fourth inning to end things in five innings with two more runs. J.D. Terrell shined on the mound for the Tigers throwing a no hitter in five innings with eight strikeouts. Pierce led the way again at the plate going 2-for-3 with a triple, and Coven Crumpton and Brock combined for five RBIs.

The tournament concluded for CCHS with a close 11-10 walk-off loss to Gadsden City High School. Entering the top of the seventh inning needing at least three runs to keep the game going, Terrel doubled to score a run followed by a Pierce single and a ground out that scored another run to make it 11-10. A flyout ended the game. Pierce shined again at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort and was a home run shy of the cycle. Josh Parker and Dale combined for five RBIs.

Rain on April 2 moved the Tigers’ clash with Marbury High School to April 3. Marbury got the best of CCHS 4-1 with Cromer collecting an RBI, and Corey Minor was a highlight, throwing three and one-third innings allowing no hits with two strikeouts in relief.

 

Thorsby High School

Thorsby High School carried its nine-game winning streak before spring break into April, but its game with Elmore County High School on April 2 was canceled due to weather. The Rebels clashed with Reeltown High School on April 4 in an AHSAA Class 2A Area 6 game, and Reeltown snapped the winning streak with an 8-2 win. Thorsby outhit Reeltown 6-5, but three errors from the Rebels were costly. Braylon Carroll was 2-for-3 with a double, and Malachi Allgood was 2-for-2 to lead Thorsby at the plate.

 

Verbena High School

Rain affected Verbena High School’s week of action, but the Red Devils got its April 1 game with Isabella in, falling 4-1. Chris Guzman was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Layton Bradford and Kaden Coggins each had a single. Guzman started for Verbena and went seven innings with seven strikeouts. Verbena’s game with Notasulga High School on April 2 was canceled due to weather.

 

Jemison High School

Jemison High School had its AHSAA Class 5A Area 7 clash with Holtville High School on April 2 moved due to weather, but traveled to Holtville on April 4 for a doubleheader. The Panthers fell 16-0 in game one with Trent Gaines, J.P. Gentry, Hunter Scott and Cooper Smitherman each recording singles. Holtville swept the doubleheader with an 8-0 win in game two. Scott was 2-for-3, and Daniel Flores, Luke Gann and Smitherman each had singles.
