AOTW: Smith’s 11 RBIs earns AOTW honors

Maplesville High School’s Mollie Kayte Smith is this week’s athlete of the week after her performances during the week of March 15-21. Smith piled up 11 RBIs for the Red Devils in four games during the week, including three AHSAA Class 1A Area 6 matchups to push them to a 4-0 start in area play.

Smith also made two starts in the circle for Maplesville during the week, beginning in game one of the doubleheader with Autaugaville High School on March 18. Smith threw three innings with one hit and eight strikeouts in a 15-0 win. She picked up an RBI in game one, and was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs in game two. Her second start came against Billingsley High School on March 19 earning seven strikeouts in a 11-8 win. She was also the difference at the plate smacking a three-RBI triple that proved to be the difference in the three-run win.

Smith’s week concluded with four innings of relief against Shelby County High School on March 21 surrendering two hits and two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts, and she had her biggest game at the plate going 2-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs.

 

Honorable mention: Patrick Prady, Thorsby High School

Thorsby High School had the pleasant surprise of a breakout day from Patrick Prady on March 16 in two games for the Rebels at Verbena High School. Prady started game one against Calhoun High School and showed promise going three innings with no hits and nine strikeouts. He went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBIs. He knocked his second home run of the day in game two with a 1-for-3 effort in a 9-0 win over Verbena High School.
