Central Alabama Wellness is hosting an event that is the first of its kind in Chilton County on March 9 at the YMCA of Chilton County. The group is hosting the Prevention Works Boots and BBQ Community Wellness Fair from noon-2 p.m. that will connect the Chilton County community with its Community Wellness Committee.

The Community Wellness Committee was made from the Chilton County Children’s Policy Council, and it is a working committee that is made up of different community partners that focus on educating Chilton County on ways to have better health and wellness, such as underage drinking, drug use, etc.

The committee is open to the public and anyone in the community looking to help better the wellness of the residents around them. Zina Cartwell, Prevention Director at Central Alabama Wellness, said having individuals who are out in the community on the committee is key because the ideas they have work, and they understand what the community needs and what information will be helpful.

“We meet monthly, and it is open to anyone who would like to be a part of it,” Cartwell said. “We discuss ways that we can affect our community in a positive way, and to educate our community as much as possible.”

The Prevention Works Boots and BBQ Community Wellness Fair is focused on promoting the complete wellness of individuals — mentally, physically and emotionally. Vendors will be at the event to hand out helpful wellness items, a DJ will be on hand and free food will be provided to visitors.

“Having an event that people in Chilton County can come to and get information (is important), and also educating the public on the importance of total wellness,” Cartwell said. “We want to do things in the community that will enhance change, and also educate and empower people to make the right decisions.”

Central Alabama Wellness is hosting its annual Back to School Bash in the summer as well, passing out school supplies to students. The group is taking donations of school supplies at the community wellness fair on March 9.

The Prevention Works Boots and BBQ Community Wellness Fair is at 405 Ollie Avenue, Clanton. For more information, call Central Alabama Wellness at 205-651-0077.
