Isabella girls, CCHS & Maplesville boys finish runner-up in area tournaments

Chilton County had three representatives in area basketball tournament finals on Feb. 7 with all the teams finishing runner-up in their respective tournaments. All three teams clinched spots in the sub-regional round by making their area tournament finals.

Isabella High School’s varsity girl’s basketball team hosted Central of Coosa County High School in the AHSAA Class 2A Area 7 tournament championship. The Mustangs trailed by as many as 13 in the second half, but cut the lead to three points with 40 seconds left before the comeback fell just short.

Lexi Higgins and Makayla Logan each had 16 points in the final. Higgins and Amelia Fjeldstad represented Isabella on the AHSAA Class 2A Area 7 All-Tournament Team. Thorsby High School’s Makinley Turner was also named to the team.

Isabella will travel to Cold Springs High School on Feb. 9 for their sub-regional matchup, making it to the playoffs five of the last six seasons. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Maplesville High School’s varsity boy’s basketball team played a tight game with Notasulga High School in the AHSAA Class 1A Area 7 tournament championship on their home floor. The lead changed seven times in the first nine minutes, and Maplesville led 28-24 at halftime and 44-41 after the third quarter. No lead for either team was higher than five points throughout the game until late.

Tied at 50 with 3:30 left in the game, Notasulga ended the final on an 11-3 run to win the tournament championship. Aiden Abbott led Maplesville in scoring with 23 points and knocked down three 3-pointers. Nehemiah McCary had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Red Devils as well. Abbott and McCary were named to the AHSAA Class 1A Area 7 All-Tournament Team.

Maplesville travels to R.C. Hatch High School on Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. for its sub-regional game.

Chilton County High School’s varsity boy’s basketball team finished runner-up in the AHSAA Class 6A Area 5 tournament championship, falling to Benjamin Russell High School 63-39. Cayden Meank led the Tigers in scoring with 15 points, followed by Justin Godwin with a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Eli Dale, Meank and Godwin were named to the AHSAA Class 6A Area 5 All-Tournament Team following the final.

The Tigers will travel to McAdory High School on Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. in the sub-regional round. This is the fourth time in the last five seasons CCHS has advanced to the postseason.
