Tigers, Red Devils advance to semifinals in varsity boys’ tournament

The first round of the 2024 Varsity Boy’s Chilton County Basketball Tournament featured two schools advancing to the semifinals on Jan. 4-5 with a chance to take home the title.

Chilton County and Verbena high school opened the tournament after partnering to host the tournament at CCHS, and the Tigers cruised to a 76-29 win. The four seed CCHS built a 38-11 lead at halftime and were led by D.J. Caffey with 13 points on 5-for-7 shooting. He also knocked down three of four attempts from 3-point range.

Eli Dale contributed 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting and added seven assists and six steals. Jackson Yates posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor. Marshall Thornhill had nine points and five rebounds, and Justin Godwin filled the stat sheet with eight points, five steals, five rebounds and four assists.

The win set up a date with the one seed Thorsby High School in the first semifinal on Jan. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The three seed Maplesville High School took its second win of the season over the six seed Isabella High School 54-31 on Jan. 3. The Red Devils had two scorers in double figures with Jakobe Nix going for 16 points, five steals and four rebounds, and Nehemiah McCary posting 15 points and six rebounds.

Aidan Abbott had nine points, six rebounds and three steals, and Johnathan Wilson had six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Maplesville faces the two seed Jemison on Jan. 5 at 6:30 p.m. with a spot in the championship game on the line.
