Thorsby and Maplesville high schools each advanced with first round wins in the 2024 Varsity Girl’s Chilton County Basketball Tournament on Jan. 2-3.

The four seed Rebels took down the five seed Jemison High School in the opening game of the tournament on Jan. 2, 49-44. The Rebels avenged an earlier 43-33 loss this season to the Panthers on Dec. 5. Brooklyn Reeser led the way with 26 points for Thorsby, and Makinley Turner contributed 12 points.

“I’m happy for our girls to win at this great event, but we would play really well for two or three minutes then lose our focus and intensity for four to five minutes,” Thorsby head coach Kris Wood said. “This cycle just repeated itself the whole game. We will have to play good ball the whole game if we’re going to have a chance to beat our next opponent.”

Thorsby will take on the one seed Isabella High School on Jan. 4 at 5 p.m. in the first semifinal of the tournament.

The three seed Maplesville took care of the six seed Verbena High School 34-12 in the second first round matchup on Jan. 3. The win is the Red Devils first over an in-county opponent this season.

The win sets up a matchup with the two seed Chilton County High School on Jan. 5 at 5 p.m.
