Marvin Morton will stick to his defensive football roots in his next coaching opportunity after accepting the defensive coordinator position at Wetumpka High School. Morton was hired just before Christmas after being relieved of his duties as head coach at Chilton County High School on Nov. 13.

Morton and Wetumpka head coach Bear Woods are good friends, and it was not long after the news broke of Morton’s change at CCHS before Woods reached out.

“I respect what he is doing over at Wetumpka … He wanted me to come in as the defensive coordinator,” Morton said. “He felt like I could definitely contribute to the program. They have a young team, and I am very excited about this opportunity and new challenge in my career to see what I bring to the Wetumpka program.”

Morton spent five years at Chilton County, three seasons as the defensive coordinator and two seasons as head coach. While at CCHS, he said the relationships he built with his players is what he valued most.

“Seeing former players being successful in life, watching them grow from their freshman to senior year and the progress they made as a player and as an individual as well,” Morton said. “Watching that development is rewarding for me, and is one thing I will appreciate from the last five years.”

Morton’s move to Wetumpka will begin in January once the new school year begins.
