Thorsby High School’s Makinley Turner surpassed 1,000 career points in her high school basketball career earlier this season. She surpassed the mark in the Rebels’ third game of the season, and was honored on Dec. 15 in front of the home crowd following Thorsby’s 44-40 win over Westminster School at Oak Mountain.

“She is an outstanding young woman, and it is quite an accomplishment,” Thorsby head coach Kris Wood said. “Some players celebrate getting 1,000 career points, but they include middle school or junior high points. These were all points scored in varsity action. We are really proud of her, and her teammates were happy to celebrate with her too.”

The senior has been a member of the Rebels’ varsity girl’s basketball team since her eighth-grade season. Since then, she has been a part of Chilton County Tournament and area tournament winning teams. Turner also holds the girl’s school record for points in a single game with 44.

“I am very grateful to be able to hold this accomplishment, but I would like to thank my teammates for helping me along the way,” Turner said. “I could not have done it without them and their amazing support.”

Turner is able to score at all three levels on the floor, which has contributed to her stellar scoring performances since eighth grade. However, she also knows when it is time to get her teammates involved.

“She doesn’t just shoot all the time either. She passes and shares the ball, and plays good defense,” Wood said. “She will do well wherever life takes her, but we are certainly going to miss her next year.”

Turner has signed to play college softball at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College after graduation in May 2024.
