In a matchup between the top two teams in AHSAA Class 2A Region 4 football, the top-ranked team in Class 2A football B.B. Comer High School prevailed 35-13 over Thorsby High School.

The Rebels jumped ahead early when Coden Cummings took in a 22-yard touchdown run to put Thorsby up 7-0. Comer responded just before the end of the quarter to make it 7-7 after one period. A Comer safety and a rushing touchdown in the second quarter gave them the 15-7 lead at halftime.

Cummings had 38 yards on 16 carries to lead the Rebels. He also caught three passes for 34 yards, but Nate Thomas caught six passes for 96 yards to lead the Thorsby offense.

“We had a good game plan for (Comer), and our guys went out and played hard,” Thorsby head coach Daryl Davis said. “We were down one touchdown at halftime, and we pretty much executed what we wanted to do.”

The third quarter was all Comer outscoring Thorsby 20-0 in the frame to take a commanding 35-7 lead. Thorsby continued to fight late in the game, and Grayson McManus found Cummings from 10 yards out to bring the game to its final tally.

McManus was 12-for-24 for 185 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The Thorsby defense was led by Malachi Allgood with 11 tackles, followed by McManus with 10. Braylon Carroll pulled down and interception and Luke Turner forced a fumble for Thorsby as well.

“Our kids had a great week of practice and played hard, and that is all you can ask of them,” Davis said. “We are just starting to come into our own, and now we have a huge game this week at Ranburne. Hopefully we will come out, go to work and get ready.”

Thorsby (5-2) stays on the road in their next game traveling to Ranburne High School on Oct. 20 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
