Thorsby High School mounted a comeback on the road at Central of Coosa County High School to move to 4-1 on the 2023 season on Sept. 22. The Rebels fell behind twice in the game but showed resolve to pull out the 20-14 win.

Central Coosa struck first when Thorsby put the ball on the ground and the Cougars capitalized with a 50-yard scoop and score to take a 6-0 lead that they held until halftime. After a litany of penalties in the first half, Thorsby coach Daryl Davis got his team refocused at halftime to make the comeback.

“We had a game plan going in to set the tone early, and we did not do that,” Davis said. “We had too many penalties and mistakes … We have to clean that up, and we have an off week which is good to get back to work and clean some of that stuff up.”

Thorsby opened the second half scoring on their first drive capped by an eight-yard touchdown run by quarterback Grayson McManus. The lead was short lived as Central Coosa ripped off a long 85-yard touchdown run to retake the lead at 14-6. McManus ran for a team-high 164 yards on 19 carries. As a team, Thorsby ran for 343 of their 370 total yards.

Later in the third quarter, McManus got the Rebels into the end zone again, this time from 45 yards out to cut the lead down to 14-12.

Trailing entering the fourth quarter, Nate Thomas broke off his own long touchdown run, this one from 50 yards out to give Thorsby its first lead of the game at 18-14. Thomas converted the two-point conversion to put the game away at 20-14 and put a bow on the Thorsby comeback.

Malachi Allgood and Christian Davenport led the Rebels’ defense with 11 tackles each followed by Tyler Lockhart with nine. Lockhart and Coden Cummings each pulled down an interception for the defense as well.

Thorsby (4-1) will be on bye next week and back in action on Oct. 6 hosting Fayetteville High School for an AHSAA Class 2A Region 4 matchup.
