Eli Kendrick is this week’s athlete of the week after his performance against Central of Coosa County High School on Sept. 15. The senior quarterback, who has been on a tear through the first three games of the season, put together perhaps his best game of the three against Central Coosa — and did so in just one half.

Kendrick needed one half to account for 274 of the Mustangs’ 477 yards of offense in the game. He was 8-for-11 through the air with 183 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns to lead the 63-0 rout.

Honorable mention: Tyler Mims, Isabella High School

Senior wide receiver Tyler Mims emerged as Kendrick’s favorite target in the win, pulling in five catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns to lead the way for the Mustangs receiving corps.

Honorable mention: Coden Cummings, Thorsby High School

Thorsby High School senior running back Coden Cummings had arguably his best game for his new team on Sept. 15 against Woodland High School. Cummings ran for a game-high 156 yards and scored touchdown runs of 15 and 85 yards in the second quarter to boost the Rebels to a homecoming win.

Honorable mention: Jacob Morris, Verbena High School

It was anything but glamorous, however, Jacob Morris and Verbena High School grinded out their first win of 2023 by way of smash-mouth football. Morris led the Red Devils’ running back committee in touches and yards with 18 and 107, respectively, and got into the end zone twice.
