Verbena High School fell to 0-2 on the 2023 season after a 50-26 loss on the road at Fayetteville High School on Sept. 1. Running back Jacob Morris got into the end zone three times in the game for the Red Devils to lead the team.

Verbena fell behind 13-0 after the first quarter, but did fight back in the second frame as Morris posted touchdown runs of four and 22 yards. Fayetteville added a touchdown as well, and the deficit sat at just 20-14 at halftime.

It was the third quarter that spelled trouble for Verbena as Fayetteville came out of halftime and posted 23 points in the quarter to take a commanding 43-14 lead.

Thomas Cabrera had a 16-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter, and Morris ripped off a 78-yard touchdown run with a few minutes to go for his third score.

Verbena (0-2) heads back on the road for their next matchup on Sept. 8 visiting Loachapoka High School in the school’s first AHSAA Class 1A Region 4 game of the season.
