Verbena High School’s Jaycee Quinn shined on the mound during the 2023 AHSAA North-South All-Star Softball Classic at Lagoon Park in Montgomery on July 19. Quinn, who was the lone Chilton County player selected for the game to the South team, helped them to a 3-3 tie in game one behind a solid inning of pitching.

Quinn was 0-for-2 at the plate in game one, but recorded two strikeouts in an inning pitched when she took the mound. The rising senior threw nine pitches in the inning, and all were strikes.

“It made me feel a lot better (pitching well),” Quinn said. “My bat had been very, very rusty, so to be able to go in and do really well with my pitching made me feel a lot better.”

In game two, the South team scored five runs in the seventh inning to squeak out a 6-5 win to take the series. Quinn was 0-for-1 at the plate and threw two-thirds of an inning giving up two hits and a run.

It was a full day for Quinn and the participants on July 19 as they started the day with a two-hour practice to get acclimated with their new teammates. Then, both teams ate lunch together at Faulkner University before heading back to the fields for photos and the two games.

“It was pretty fun overall,” Quinn said. “All of the girls were really nice, and it was just a fun day.”

Quinn said she still plans to take it easy with softball until the Verbena season begins next spring.
