Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Cannon Miller of Chilton County High School is The Clanton Advertiser’s county baseball player of the year for the 2023 season.

The senior made an impression in the CCHS lineup and pitching rotation this season transitioning from behind the plate. Miller went from the Tigers’ everyday catcher last season to its most lethal starting pitcher this year throwing 49 and two-third innings with a 5-2 record. He had an ERA just under two at 1.90 and struck out 70 hitters while walking 18.

“Early on we were not sure how many innings he would throw, but as the season progressed he worked into being a key starter for us,” CCHS coach Ryan Ellison said. “He did well going from behind the plate to pitching and vice versa. It was something he did a great job at and had a lot of success in doing so.”

Miller was the Tigers most potent bat as well boasting a .482 batting average and a whopping 1.450 OPS. He had six home runs, 15 doubles and 41 RBIs and lead CCHS in all those categories.

“This group of seniors are a meaningful bunch to us and they have been a big part of the success we have had, but Cannon in particular,” Ellison said. “He is one of the leaders of the senior group and has been a guy that has been starting for us since his sophomore year … He had a great year this year not only at the plate, but on the mound as well.”

Ellison added that Miller is a fierce competitor who comes in ready each day. Along with being a talented player, his ability to be ready gives him an edge, Ellison said.
