Nearly 100 Chilton County area track and field athletes will represent the county at the AHSAA Track & Field Sectionals at Northridge High School in Tuscaloosa on April 28-29. From javelin throwers to sprinters, from shot put throwers to hurdlers, Chilton County will have representation in numerous events at sectionals with a chance to compete at the state meet on the line.

The athletes will compete and be judged off of the state qualifying standards that determine who moves on. Each classification has a different number that needs to be achieved to lock an athlete into the state meet. For example, in Class 7A, the boy’s high jump mark is 5-feet, 8 inches. In Class 1A-3A, the mark is 5 feet, 4 inches.

Class 6A Chilton County High School will send the most athletes to the sectional meet with 39, and is the only school competing outside the Class 1A-3A division. CCHS coach Marvin Morton said both the girls and boys 4×100-meter relay teams have a good chance of qualifying for the state meet. Both the girls and boys 4×100-meter relay teams set the CCHS school records this season.

Thrower Hunter Ousley in the discus, Payton Shepard in the 110-meter hurdles and Destiny Peterson in the 100-meter hurdles are seeded high in their section and hope to parlay that into a state meet birth.

Isabella High School, who has been a staple at the Class 1A-3A state meet in recent years, has another good opportunity to advance more athletes to the finals this season. Fifteen Mustangs will travel to Tuscaloosa to represent Isabella, and it is led by perennial state track competitor DeAsia Wilson who has advanced to the finals in girls jumping events each of the last few years.

Makenzi Barrett is seeded in the top five for the girl’s javelin throw before the sectional meet. Wilson and Barrett are the only girl athletes on the Isabella track and field team, and both are poised to advance to the state finals. This is Barrett’s first year competing with the track and field team.

“We try to give people their best chance to succeed throughout the season, and we look at which events they have the best opportunity to go to the state meet in and work on that,” Isabella coach Landon Mims said. “We try to spread everyone out as much as we can and try to get them to do multiple events to give them a better chance to move on.”

In the men’s running events Isabella’s DreVon Lee is the Mustangs highest seeded sprinter. Jimmie Sosa has set a new personal best in the javelin throw multiple times already this season. Both hope to duplicate those performances in Tuscaloosa.

Maplesville High School will have 17 athletes at the sectional meet, and have a few seeded in the top three of their respective events. Will Harrison is the top seed in the 1600-meter run in the section, and Dalton Carter is the first seed in the 110-meter hurdles. Ethan Rencher is seeded in the top three in the 200-meter dash, and all three will hope to end the sectional meet where they began.

Billingsley High School will have 19 athletes at the sectional meet in the Class 1A-3A division competing with Maplesville and Isabella.
