Chilton County High School took home the team title in the 2023 Chilton County Golf Tournament on March 21 at the Clanton Country Club. The Tigers competed against golfers from Jemison, Maplesville, Isabella and Thorsby high schools in the tournament that saw 26 golfers competing for the title.

“We did not necessarily score as well as we have in previous tournaments, but our team showed some grit and played well under some different circumstances,” CCHS coach Austin Moncus said. “I am proud of them, even though they were not on their best game, to push through and really hit some good golf shots down the stretch that allowed us to pull out the win.”

Ella Young of CCHS won the girl’s 2023 Chilton County Golf Tournament shooting an 80. Young, a sophomore, made it three county tournament titles in a row after winning the 2021 and 2022 tournaments. Young finished ahead of fellow CCHS golfer Catherine Stone who shot a 94.

“She has been playing some really good golf lately,” Moncus said. “She works hard, and she wants to be really good at the game. I think that makes a difference for her because she wants to be good, and she puts in the work to be good. She goes the extra mile … and it is really paying off for her.”

Evan Harrison of Maplesville won the boy’s 2023 Chilton County Golf Tournament shooting a 76. Harrison, an all-tournament team member in 2022, took the next step and secured the win for the Red Devils edging out Jemison’s Ben Jackson who placed second with an 84.

Carson Church was the low scorer for the Thorsby boy’s team shooting a 92, and Mya Gore led the Thorsby girls with a 119.

Ethan Jones and Steven Mahan both shot an 84 to lead the CCHS boy’s team. Moncus said Mahan and Carson Stone have both improved greatly since last year and have become really consistent throughout the season. Jones has continued swinging a hot stick this season after a standout year last season.

Isabella’s Dawson Edwards was the Mustangs low boy’s scorer with a 121, and Addyson Williams led the girl’s team with a 104.

The AHSAA Sectionals are May 1, and all Chilton County golfers will be looking to perfect their games before then with a sub-state berth on the line.
