Calera High School got the best of Chilton County High School 10-2 on the softball field on March 21 in the Tigers first AHSAA Class 5A Area 5 game of the season. Calera posted two big innings in the fourth and sixth frames that plated a combined nine runs, and capitalized on five CCHS errors to secure the win.

Calera got on the board first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, but a Mallie Harrison RBI double in the third inning tied the game.

After securing the first two outs in the top of the fourth inning, the Tigers committed two errors later in the inning. An RBI double and single by Calera, and benefitting from the CCHS errors, posted five runs in the frame to jump ahead 6-1. Mallie Harrison, the Tigers starting pitcher, helped her own cause with a solo home run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-2. She was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Lily Benson also recorded three hits going 3-for-4 with a double.

In the circle, Mallie Harrison surrendered 11 hits and 10 runs, but only four were earned after the errors by the Tigers led to multiple Calera runs.

Calera’s second big inning in the sixth put up four runs and pushed the game out of reach for the Tigers.

CCHS looks to bounce back in their next game on March 23 hosting Oak Mountain High School at 4:30 p.m.
