Thorsby High School’s Makinley Turner is this week’s athlete of the week after her performances for the Rebels during March 14-20. Turner got the ball in all three of the Rebels AHSAA Class 2A Area 6 games this week, and the junior shined bright.
Turner threw three complete games and amassed 39 strikeouts. She allowed only 11 hits, one earned run and one walk.
“She is a great player and great leader overall, and we are proud to have her,” Thorsby softball coach Holly Matson said.
Turner and the Rebels got a gritty 3-2 win over Fayetteville High School on March 14 where she gave up four hits, one walk and sat down 12 batters. Turner did her part at the plate as well going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Turner’s bat stayed hot in Thorsby’s 8-3 win over B.B. Comer High School on March 16 going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. The win was her most dominant of the three in the circle allowing two hits, no walks and striking out 17 batters.
“She is doing a phenomenal job,” Matson said. “Her bat is coming along as well, but her pitching is … to me, she is the best pitcher in the county. I could not ask for anyone better.”
Turner ended her phenomenal week leading the Rebels to a 13-3 win over Isabella High School. She went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored, and allowed five hits and struck out 10 batters.
