Long-time city of Clanton employee Bernie Mims has retired after 21 years with the street and maintenance department.

“I enjoyed working there … You know you have a job everyday whether rain or shine,” Mims said.

Prior to working for the city, Mims had been in construction.

Mims said the good benefits and pay were what kept him working for the city. He also said he had a good boss in the now-retired Dale Collins. Collins was who told Mims about the job opening and hired him. Mims said he had previously heard about job openings, but those had required a CDL, which he did not have. He said while working in the street and maintenance department he trained to do a variety of jobs and was on call. Several co-workers came and went over the years, but he was glad to stay with the city long enough to retire from there.

Mims decided it was time to retire because he had reached the age where he could get full benefits and his health was starting to limit some of what he could do.

During retirement, Mims plans to relax and spend time with his grandchildren.

His nine grandchildren range in age from 1 to 16 and all live in Clanton.
