Maplesville boys, CCHS girls round out county tournament finals

The final semifinal day at the 2023 Chilton County Basketball Tournament saw the Maplesville High School varsity boys and the Chilton County High School varsity girls teams advance to their respective finals.

The first semifinal on Jan. 6 saw CCHS run away with a 68-37 win over Thorsby High School to advance to the varsity girl’s county tournament final. CCHS was led by Iasia Anderson with 24 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and eight steals. Ivyonna Varner had 13 points and three 3-pointers, and Trinity Pulliam had 12 points, 16 rebounds and 10 blocks for the Tigers.

Thorsby was led by Makinley Turner with 19 points.

“We knew CCHS was a good team,” Thorsby girl’s coach Kris Wood said. “Our girls gave a good effort, but we had trouble with turnovers and defensive rebounding, and they got a lot of points from those.”

The No. 2 seeded Tigers advance to the final on Jan. 7 at Jemison High School where they will take on the No. 1 seed Isabella High School at 5 p.m. for a chance to raise the trophy.

Maplesville outlasted Thorsby in a thriller of a semifinal in the varsity boy’s tournament. The No. 2 seeded Red Devils were able to squeak by the No. 4 seed Thorsby 44-43 to arrange a date with the No. 1 seed CCHS in the final on Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.

Maplesville was led by Aidan Abbott with 14 points and Jakavion Jackson with 13 points. The Red Devil’s Jakobe Nix pitched in six points. Thorsby’s Aiden Seeley had 13 points for the Rebels, and Remington Taylor added seven points.

All of the 2023 Chilton County Basketball Tournament finals will be played at Jemison High School on Jan. 7 starting with the B-Team finals between Chilton County and Thorsby at 3:30 p.m. The varsity girl’s final between CCHS and Isabella will follow at 5:30 p.m., and the CCHS and Maplesville varsity boy’s final will be at 7 p.m.
