The City of Thorsby Christmas tree lighting is on the horizon for the Swedish settlement in the south, and Christmas spirit is already in the air. The tree lighting will take place on Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. at Richard Wood Park.

The Thorsby High School band, Thorsby First Baptist Church and The Church at Bethel are all scheduled to perform at the tree lighting. The Swedish Queens and the Strawberry Queens will be on hand selling hot chocolate and snacks to patrons. All proceeds raised by the queens will go towards sponsoring foster children with the Chilton County DHR Christmas Wishes Program.

Councilwoman Tonya Ray was tasked with spearheading the festivities by the Thorsby City Council.

“We have several pieces of entertainment that will be there,” Ray said. “That we get our churches involved is very important.”

Ray not only organized the tree lighting festivities, but also the City of Thorsby Christmas in the Park that will take place from Nov. 27-Jan 5. Christmas in the Park will be held in Richard Wood Park and feature Christmas trees sponsored and decorated by local businesses or groups. The six-foot trees were provided by the Thorsby City Council for $30, and the smaller trees will create a path to the big tree that will be lit on Nov. 27.

The council has around five trees left, and applications for a tree may be picked up at Thorsby City Hall.

“I want to see good things happen in Thorsby … family things,” Ray said. “It is going to be a fun night.”

The Thorsby City Council announced at its Nov. 21 meeting that the Thorsby Christmas parade will take place on Dec. 3 at 9 a.m. and take the traditional parade route through the city.
