In honor of Mother’s Day, the Humane Society of Chilton County is giving away vouchers for community residents to have their female dog or cat spayed.

Shelter director Jennifer Fesmire said 54 vouches will be available for cats and 54 for dogs on May 7 starting at 11 a.m. at 139 Shade Tree Drive in Clanton.

Being able to provide the vouchers is important for the Humane Society because it will limit the number of unwanted liters of kittens and puppies being brought to the shelter.

Vouchers will be given on a first come, first serve basis until all are given away.

“It is one voucher per household so if they get a dog voucher, they cannot go get a cat voucher,” Fesmire said.

She said doing this will allow more Chilton County families to be able to participate.

One must be a Chilton County resident to qualify.

Vouchers are redeemable through the Alabama Spay/ Neuter Clinic. Residents will have four months to call the clinic and set up an appointment before the voucher expires.  Fesmire said the clinic comes to Clanton City Park once a month to pick up animals from their owners. The animals are taken to the clinic and then brought back to the park for pickup the next day.

A $20 fee will be charged for a rabies shot for animals that have yet to receive the vaccine.

The giveaway has been made possible by a generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous and some donations from community members.
