The Clanton City Council unanimously approved creating a part-time position at Senior Connection during its March 28 voting session.

Senior Connection director Vanessa McKinney, whose salary is paid by the city, is planning on retiring soon. The part-time person would work with McKinney training to take over as director.

Mims said Senior Connection is contributing $10,000 toward the position, which will remain part-time even after the person becomes director.

Efforts continue to secure funding for a splash pad for city park. Mayor Jeff Mims said a previous grant request had been approved, but the funding became unavailable.

“Now, it is back on the table, but we had to reprice some things,” Mims said.

He said staff was working hard to get the application completed. Increase in costs now outs the project at half a million dollars.

The council approved moving forward with the grant application to the Alabama Department of economic and community affairs. As a part of this, the council also formally established the Clanton Parks and Recreation Department.

A grant for a dog park is also being pursued.

The council also authorized transferring funds to the Clanton Industrial Development Board.
