Jemison Intermediate School hosted a transportation career day on Nov. 5, giving its students a look at different careers in the transportation/trucking industry.

Several local companies and organizations were present at the career day, including the Jemison Police Department, Jemison Fire and Rescue, Spire, AT&T, Chilton Water Authority, Chilton Contractors, Ellison Farms, Alabama 811 and others.

“I think it’s really good just to have the community come out and be involved in the schools,” JIS school counselor Lauren Barnes said. “… It really just gets the kids involved in what type of careers there are out there.”

Representatives from each organization were present to speak to the students about their day-to-day responsibilities. They gave the students insight into what it is like to work in the transportation industry.

“They loved coming out,” Barnes said. “They just wanted to be a part of this career day, and just show the kids all the opportunities in life.”

The response from the students was outstanding, according to Barnes. They were excited, engaged and asked a lot of questions.
