Chilton County High School alumni are mourning the loss of 2020 alumnus Eli Babb after he died in a work-related accident.

Babb, who was 19 years old, was a lineman with Pike Electric, working on Alabama Power lines after recent storms in Jefferson County.

He and a coworker died while working on the project on Aug. 31.

“We were extremely saddened by his loss,” CCHS Principal Ron Pinson said. “Our hearts go out to the family and especially the Class of 2020.”

Members of the Class of 2020 have been in contact with Pinson brainstorming ways to honor Babb’s memory.

Pinson said Babb will also likely be honored in a dedication in the school yearbook this year.

Pinson described Babb as a good student and a person of character, who had been recognized by school administration as Student of the Month in November of his senior year.

“He was a very good kid, kind of quiet,” Pinson said.

“He was just starting his life off and … to see him go so young is just a tremendous shock,” Pinson said.

Pike Electric has announced an investigation into the incident.

“He was pursuing his dream … to work at the power company,” Pinson said.

Alabama Power released the following statement regarding the incident: “We are aware of a tragic accident involving Pike Electric employees supporting Alabama Power in storm restoration. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Pike Electric family during this difficult time.”
