Jemison High School held graduation on June 5 with speeches and well-wishes for the Class of 2021.
To her fellow graduates, Class President Alexis Powell said, “I am so incredibly proud of you all. I know that you can achieve anything you set your mind to and this year shows just that. I know it was not the year that any of us asked for it, but, honestly, we made the best of it.”
Each valedictorian thanked those who had made the success of this class possible and gave some parting words during the ceremony.
“Always reach for wisdom, and always do things to the best of your ability,” Marybeth Porter said. “If you have those characteristics, your futures will always be bright.”
Porter said the COVID-19 pandemic has helped the graduates prepare for the future by teaching them not to take things for granted and how to work hard to succeed.
“High school is fun, but now it is over, and it is time for us to pursue our passions,” Karla Mancilla said. “It is time to learn what we want to be, if we haven’t figured it out, and follow our dreams.”
“If there is anything I have learned during my time at Jemison High School, it’s that if you want something then you have to fight for it, whether it a dream of yours, a good parking space or if you are just in the lunchroom on Tostito day,” Bronson Allemand said.
Adam Rico congratulated the class on their achievements.
“I am so grateful for the memories that I have made and the friendships that will last way beyond high school,” Hannah Ellison said.
She said she was thankful for “faculty and staff that got to know me as a person, not just as a student.”
“This year has had its full of ups and downs, and has been hard on our families, but let’s not forget our accomplishments in life and how we should thank those who helped us get to them,” Tyler Rigby said.
Audrey Price talked about the impact the school had on her and the impact she hoped she had on it.
“Be open minded to the experience of other people, allow yourself to be your own person, even if it takes a while for others to catch on,” Price said.
Caityln Harris said she hopes that the graduates remember their good times together.
“Go out into the world and be the best that you can be, no matter what you do,” Harris said.
