Jemison Police Department responded to a potential shots-fired call on May 31.
When the suspect turned his attention to the first officer that arrived on the scene, the suspect and the officer both fired shots.
According to a media release from Jemison Chief Shane Fulmer, the suspect “succumbed to his injuries while on the scene. The officer was uninjured.”
JPD had initially responded to an address on County Road 954 in Jemison at 11:30 a.m. in response to a report that “a male subject with a gun was threatening to shoot” two people in the front yard. Alabama Law Enforcement’s Agency State Bureau of Investigation later identified the suspect as Roger Dale Keller, age 71.
Fulmer said witnesses reported that multiple shots had already been fired.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved and who has been affected by this horrible situation,” Fulmer said in the release.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
“Anytime there is an officer involved shooting we don’t investigate when it is one of ours, we get SBI to do it,” Fulmer said in a phone interview.
The name of the officer is not being released during the investigation.
“Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Chilton County District Attorney’s Office,” ALEA stated in a press release. “Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing.”
