Finding ways to remain active while staying at home is a dilemma that many Chilton County residents are dealing with.

Sean Gilham with Impact Martial Arts is doing his part to help give families a possible avenue to choose.

Gilham will offer a free karate workout April 9 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The workout is expected to last between 30 to 40 minutes.

“There’s a lot of kids and parents looking for different activities while at home,” Gilham said.

In order to abide by the social distancing mantra, the workout will be available for people to join on Zoom and Facebook Live.

Gilham has already been using the two platforms to hold virtual classes and continue teaching his karate students during the pandemic.

He teaches such classes at the YMCA of Chilton County.

“It’s important to keep our students training for the goals they’ve set, and to stay motivated and keep pushing despite this setback,” Gilham said.

According to Gilham, staying active is an important part of staying healthy for children and adults.

“Families are trying to adjust the best ways they can,” Gilham said.

He encouraged the workouts to be something the entire family can do together, or it can be used as a chance for the parents to get a nice break while their children are being entertained in the other room.

Despite it being a karate workout, Gilham plans to open things up by talking about the value of teamwork.

“I feel it’s an important skill to have at this time with all that we’re dealing with,” Gilham said. “People are really having to work together to find solutions.”

He plans on offering another free workout in the future and would love to do one on a weekly basis.

Future workout dates will be posted on clantonmartialarts.com.
