Verbena High School has received $3,000 as a grant from District 81 Rep. Ed Oliver.

“I cannot begin to express how appreciative we are for this type of donation,” VHS Principal Tammy Hand said. “Typically, when schools receive money, we are told how to spend it. Obviously, Mr. Oliver was interested in how we were going to spend the money but gave me no restrictions.”

Hand said she had initially “met Mr. Oliver two years ago when he called me about making a donation to our band and media center.”

This most recent grant will be used technology.

“Many of our Chromebooks will be expiring soon, and money will be tied up trying to replace them,” Hand said. “This will allow us to purchase technology for the teachers that are replacing their Smart boards.”

These funds will also free up state and federal technology money the school usually receives to be spent on replacing more Chromebooks and purchasing additional ones toward the goal of having a device for every student.

District 81 includes the eastern portion of Chilton County.
