Hearing her name announced as the 2019 Junior Miss Peach Queen on June 25 was a surreal moment for Sophie Porter.
“It didn’t feel real at all,” Porter said.
She said she is looking forward to meeting her “new queen sisters and attending all the events while representing our Peach farmers and Chilton County … and being a good role model.”
In her six years of competing in the Young and Junior categories, Porter had never won a title.
“It (The Peach Pageant) has had such an amazing effect on me, and it has built my confidence up every year,” Porter said. “I look forward to the Peach Festival every year.”
This year during the interview portion of the competition, Porter talked about why she wanted to keep competing and what she had learned from being in the pageant.
“It was a lot different than any interview I’ve ever done,” Porter said.
Porter was also the casual wear winner.
First alternate was Cameron McGhar. Chloe Haggard was named second alternate. Third alternate was Addyson Plier. Jesslyn Maddox was named fourth alternate.
As Junior Miss Peach, Porter will receive $500 and a variety of gifts from pageant sponsors. The first alternate receives $300.
Aly DeVaughn was named Miss Congeniality, a title which is selected by the contestants.
For the first year, an essay contest scholarship opportunity was offered to the Junior Miss contestants. The girls were asked to write about the dangers of texting and driving.
Lily Newton was selected as the inaugural winner and received a $500 scholarship from the Clanton Lions Club.
In her farewell speech, outgoing 2018 Junior Miss Mattie Woodall thanked those who had supported her and made the year a success.
“To the lucky girl about to be crowned, you are in for a year of blessings and sweet memories. Take lots of pics and savor every moment and enjoy your sweet ride,” Woodall said.
2018 Little Miss Anna Mims and 2018 Young Miss Mary-Henning Dale were recognized for their perfect attendance to events during their reigns.
The photogenic winners were named during the event.
