Thorsby approves zoning change

The Thorsby Town Council approved Joe Hubbard’s request to change the zoning status of his property at 121 Peterson Ave. from town center commercial to residential high density during its meeting on March 18.

Hubbard first brought his request before the town’s Planning Commission.

The change in status means he can now build a house on the property.

According to Mayor Robert Hight, it did not make sense that the property was labeled town center commercial in the first place.

Thorsby Town Clerk Crystal Smith cleaned up the pricing guide that the town had been using for their business licenses.

The guide is based on a scale that takes into account a business’ gross revenues.

According to Smith, in 2007, the state wanted all municipalities to change to their category codes and the Council at the time passed it.

However, the ordinance is different from what was inputted to the computer system.

Smith reviewed the system and re-typed the ordinance to help clarify any mismatches that existed.

The Council approved the revised system.

In other news from the meeting:

  • The Council approved an update on the town’s Parks and Recreation bylaws that were implemented in 2014. There were only a couple of minor changes, including removing the position of concession stand director for baseball and softball.
  • According to Fire Chief James Conner, the fire fatality class the department hosted was a success with 25 students attending.
  • The Council approved the minutes from the March 4 Council meeting, the February Planning Commission meeting and the January Parks and Recreation meeting.
  • It was approved to pay the bills and transfer the funds.
