The Jemison Public Library is getting a much-needed upgrade thanks to a grant from State Rep. April Weaver.

These funds will be used to purchase a new computer and printer for the librarians to use.

Librarian Tammie McGriff said funds received in the past have gone to replacing computers for the community to use. Jemison is considering purchasing a laptop for the librarians, that way it could also be used in the auditorium. McGriff and assistant librarian Cheryl English also handle all of the booking for the auditorium.

English was a long-time volunteer with the library and was recently hired to assist McGriff. English said McGriff makes every resource the library has last as long as possible.

The computer that is going to be replaced still has a floppy disk drive.

The computer that McGriff and English have been using is outdated and slow. Having a new computer will allow checkouts to be processed more quickly and will help ensure the interlibrary loan software runs smoothly. The software allows the Clanton, Jemison and Maplesville libraries to see if a book someone wants is at another location in the county and arrange for the book to be brought to the location.

Books available at Jemison are getting updated as a third of the 2,000 books Chilton County received from the Bookapalooza program are added to the collection.

English said a portion of the funds will also help to continue children’s programming at the library, such as weekly story times and the annual Fairy Tale show.
