Leadership named for Maplesville Fire

The Maplesville Town council approved officers for the Maplesville Fire Department during a meeting on Oct. 8.

Officers had been voted on by the volunteers of the fire department prior to going to the council for approval.

Melvin Morrow, who had been serving as interim chief, was named fire chief. Aubrey Latham was named assistant fire chief. Queen Morrow was named secretary/treasurer.

Christine Epperson will remain the rescue chief for the department.

Specifications for new turnout gear for the department were also unanimously approved. Town Clerk Dawn Smitherman said the town will send the specifications to companies who might be interested in offering a bid for the town to purchase the equipment from them. The bids will be opened at the Nov. 5 meeting.

Treats on Main will be held downtown on Oct. 31 at 5 p.m. Main Street will be closed from 4:45 to 6:45 p.m.

Also during the meeting:

  • The Council granted a request for Main Street to be closed for a car show on Nov. 17.
  • A proposed agreement was received from Lightwave Inc. regarding running fiber optic cable though the town. The document will be reviewed by Smitherman and the town attorney. Mayor W.C. Hayes will also speak to the company’s representative to get more specifics and explanations on what the company is planning.
  • The Council approved one year raises of 25 cents an hour for police officers Brandon Warren and Josey Edwards, hiring Jason Reeves as a full-time officer and hiring David Jones as a part-time officer.
  • Road projects were approved to be bid for Mitchell Hill Road, Taylor Road, Sawmill Road, Magnolia Avenue, Martin Street and Crumpton Avenue. The Council received a cost estimate for the projects from the project engineer during the meeting.
  • The council approved purchasing a used unmarked police car from the Town of Thorsby to be used by Officer Josh Hubbard with the Drug Task Force.
