Mustangs grab win despite weather delays

It was a night full of rain and lightning for the Isabella and Billingsley football teams on Aug. 31. The Mustangs won 41-8.

Isabella never looked back in the second half and defeated Billingsley 41-8.

A pair of lightning delays affected the game, with the first causing the teams’ pre-game warmup to be cut short and the game to start about 20 minutes late.

Once the game got going, Isabella’s offense wasted no time as senior quarterback Jarrett Baker connected with fellow senior Blake Henderson on a 78-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the game.

Baker found Henderson streaking down the left sideline, who outran the secondary on his way to the end zone.

The combination accounted for 147 of Isabella’s 175 receiving yards on the night.

A second lightning delay was called with 8:47 left to play in the second quarter.

After the game eventually resumed, Billingsley fumbled on the first play following the delay and Isabella’s Scottie Johnson returned it 55 yards for a score to extend the Mustangs’ lead 14-0.

The wet conditions made ball handling an issue for both teams, which meant that ball security was at a premium.

Baker threw his second touchdown of the contest from 22 yards out to senior Jonathan Alstott to put Isabella on top 21-0 at halftime.

Isabella never looked back in the second half, as Scottie Johnson also ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Lance Price and Jake Logan added rushing scores of 17 and 2 yards respectively in the fourth quarter.

The Bears got on the board with a late touchdown that capped an otherwise rough night for the Billingsley offense.
