Local kids in kindergarten through sixth grade who want to learn more about the sport of football are in luck.

Jeremy Carter, a Billingsley alum who played college football at UAB and has been coaching for the past 14 years, is hosting his Elite Carter Football Camp at Clanton City Park from 8 a.m. to noon on June 16.

The cost to attend the event is $30 per camper, which includes a T-shirt and lunch.

Accepted forms of payment include cash, checks and debit cards.

Registration will be held from 8 to 8:45 a.m. the day of the camp, but anyone wanting to sign up before then may call Carter at (205) 563-0064 or email giantcarter@yahoo.com.

“We will be teaching fundamentals to the kids,” Carter said. “With everything going on with football right now when it comes to concussions, it’s easier to teach it right at an earlier age then let them take it up with them to high school.”

Carter said that helmets will not be required to participate in the camp.

Carter said he has been coaching at football camps for 10 years. This will be his second year hosting his own event.

“Every kid will go through both offensive and defensive drills,” he said. “Every kid will go through each drill, so no kid will work on a specific position. We can get a lot done in four hours, and teaching fundamentals and techniques will help them before they get up to high school.”

Carter said he will have high school coaches as well as some college football players on hand to help with the camp.

“We have got some great coaches coming,” he said.

Carter said he is also trying to get more kids involved with playing football.

“Football is fun, and even though there is contact, it’s a good sport,” he said. “A lot of us still love it.”
