Catfish round-up set to begin June 15

The Third Annual Coosa River Catfish Round-up will be held on June 15-16 at Higgins Ferry Boat Ramp.

The 24-hour event will begin at 6 p.m. on June 15 and end at that time the next day.

Sponsorship money from the tournament will be donated to Butterfly Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center. It is a new initiative this year.

Registration to enter is $100 per team or boat. A team can be made up of up to four members. The deadline for registration is 5 p.m. on June 15.

Cash prizes will be awarded to first and second place finishers, as well as for the biggest fish. The prize amounts will be dependent on how many teams take part in the tournament.

In an attempt to encourage fishing by the younger generation, children 12 years old and younger will not count toward a team’s total members.

Event shirts are included as part of the registration fee and will be given to all who enter the competition.

The tournament has grown over the past two years with 13 teams in Year One and 17 teams last year.

Event coordinator Judson Akin hopes to continue that upward trend with about 20 to 25 entries in this year’s tournament.

According to Akin, he has talked to people that did not know of the tournament until after the fact a year ago, but have shown interest since finding out.

Akin started the tournament as an opportunity for him and his buddies to see who could catch the most catfish.

Fishermen can use a variety of techniques to catch the catfish, such as rod and reel, noodling, limb lines and jugs.
