The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office had a busy day May 5. Two separate police chases ended inside the county, with one suspect remaining on the loose as of late that night.

According to the department’s Facebook page, the first incident occurred early that morning.

“Jemison Police Department, Clanton Police Department and Chilton County Deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit that began in Jemison and ended on I-65 near the 179 mile marker,” said one post.

“One of our deputies was injured while trying to stop the subject. The deputy was transported to a local hospital, and we are currently waiting on an update. The Sheriffs Department will release more information as the investigation continues. Please everyone keep the deputy and family in your thoughts and prayers.”

The department updated the officer’s condition in a later post, saying, “Our officer has now been released from the hospital and is on the way home. Other than a few battle scars, he’s expected to make a full recovery. Thank you all for your love and support!”

The second police chase began in Calera and headed south into Chilton County.

“Earlier today (May 5) Calera Police were involved in a vehicle pursuit on several Dodge Chargers and Challengers,” said another post.

“The pursuit came into Chilton County riding as a group, and all vehicles [allegedly] refused to stop. Subjects in the vehicles threw out multiple bags, suspected to be drugs. Four of the cars were located and three subjects [were] taken into custody. A fourth subject abandoned his car near the Chilton County Jail and got out on foot on Third Avenue South.”

The Sheriff’s Office posted that it tracked someone possibly matching the suspect’s description with K-9 Traffic of a Department of Corrections dog team after Clanton Police Department received a call,

The subject in question turned out to not be the suspect authorities were searching for.

“The trail went cold and all inclinations lead us to believe he was picked up,” said a post by the department. “This is [a] very in depth case, and there will be much more to come as we uncover the different pieces. The biggest thing is right now, we have no reason to believe those of you in the area are in any undue danger. As always though, please call 911 in the event you see something suspicious.”

Late on May 5 the Sheriff’s Office posted a description of the subject who remained at large as of that night

“The subject on foot is possibly armed due to an empty holster along with a large amount of cash located in the abandoned car,” said a post. “A search is underway at the moment for a skinny black male estimated to be 5’6”- 6” foot, wearing black pants and black shirt. The search is contained to the area around the Chilton County Jail.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect is asked to call the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office at (205) 755-7898.
