The Isabella Mustangs wrapped up the softball regular season on a high note with a 9-2 victory at home against Verbena.

It was the eighth win of the season for the Mustangs, who continue to develop consistent play in the field.

Noelle Fjeldstad went the distance for Isabella and did her part to silence the Verbena hitters. She allowed just one earned run and five hits in seven innings.

Isabella’s defense was on its toes throughout the game and was there to backup Fjeldstad on several occasions.

“We didn’t have any errors, and that was fun,” Isabella head coach Dustin Green said. “I’m proud of the way Noelle kept them off-balance.”

It took a little longer for the defense to match the production that has been there from the offense for most of the year, but now that it has, Green is focused on keeping it that way.

“When we make the plays, we’re as good as anybody,” Green said.

Isabella out-hit Verbena 10-5 in the game, and the scoreboard reflected that.

Kristin Wilson and Fjeldstad combined to drive in seven of the Mustangs’ nine runs with four and three RBIs respectively.

According to Wilson, everyone in the lineup has been finding ways to contribute in the second half of the season.

This is building up momentum heading into the area [tournament],” Wilson said.

The Mustangs came out hitting on all cylinders to start the game with three runs in the first inning and five more in the second.

Early run support can go a long way in building up a confident mindset for a pitcher.

“It gives a great feeling of security,” Fjeldstad said.

Fjeldstad has developed into a reliable pitcher for Isabella during the season.

“I love playing softball at every position,” Fjeldstad said. “Where they need me I’ll play. I basically taught myself how to pitch, so I’ve come a long way.”

Isabella finished the regular season with a record of 8-11 overall and 5-2 in area play. The Mustangs will now turn their attention to hosting the Area 5-1A Tournament on May 1.

“It’s our fans and our school,” Wilson said. “Everybody’s going to be here.”
