The Clanton City Council unanimously approved prohibiting the use of compression engine brakes, commonly called jake brakes, within the city limits during its meeting on Feb. 26.
An exception will be made for emergency situations and emergency vehicles.
The ordinance defines an emergency situation as “one in which there is imminent danger of collision with property, persons or animals.”
Penalty for use of the brake in a non-emergency situation is listed as a $500 fine and/or up to six months in jail.
Noise caused by the use of such brakes by trucks and tractor trailers was given as a reason for the ordinance.
Before the vote, the general public was invited to speak in favor or opposition to the measure. No one chose to comment.
The City Council suspended the rules in order to vote on the ordinance immediately, rather than having to wait until the next meeting.
The ordinance also went into effect immediately and will be enforced by the Clanton Police Department.
During the meeting, the City Council also approved:
— A liquor license for Lil Suzy Q convenience store. Mayor Billy Joe Driver said the request had been made previously, but the facility was not ready.
— Paying $41,000 to Callaway Concrete for a project at the city ball field.
— Summer employees for the recreation department.
