Verbena High School will look the part this softball season after receiving a $2,500 grant from Alabama Power on Feb. 12.

The grant will be used to purchase new uniforms for the softball team for the upcoming season.

“It’s great for our girls, so they won’t have to put out as much money out of their pockets,” Verbena head coach Kala Langston said.

According to Langston, the uniforms will be worn over the next several years.

The plan is to have home and road uniforms as well as a pair of pants for each player.

“With girls, you have to look good to play good,” Langston said.

Verbena’s school colors are red and white and will be prominent in the uniform design.

However, the players have also shown interest in an alternate option that will feature a neutral color, such as dark gray.

“We’re going to work on that,” Langston said. “They’ll be wearing it for a few years, so I told them to pick something that looks good.”

It is Langston’s third year leading the softball program since returning to her alma mater.

She hopes that the uniforms are the first of many improvements connected to Verbena softball in the coming years.

After going through the application process for the grant, Langston received a call confirming that the program had been chosen about a week prior to the presentation.

“I was really excited to know that it was actually coming,” Langston said. “It was a great feeling.”
