The Billingsley girls basketball team won the Area 9-2A championship with a 58-41 victory over Verbena on Feb. 8.

It was Billingsley’s first girls basketball area title win in over a decade.

Several players came through for the Bears on the big stage, led by Abby Tindol’s 19 points.

Hollan Horton and Trinity Price both finished a couple of rebounds shy of a double-double.

Horton had 16 points and eight rebounds, while Price tallied 14 points and seven boards.

Tindol, Horton and Price were each named to the all-area tournament team for their stellar outings.

JaNiya White of Verbena led all scorers with 27 points.

The game was played at Fayetteville High School, which entered the tournament as the top seed before being upset by Verbena in the semifinals.

Josh Robinson is in his first year as head coach of Billingsley’s varsity girls team, and winning the area is a good first step that he will look to build upon as the program moves forward.

“It has been a great experience for me to be able to coach this team this year,” Robinson said. “They work hard, play hard and care about each other. We have improved each week throughout the season, and are fortunately playing our best basketball at the right time.”
