Chilton County High School received two PEECh grants totaling $1,800 on Feb. 9.
Teacher Jennifer Tapley-Blencowe wrote a grant for the Scholars Bowl team to receive $1,100. Blencowe handles the varsity team, while Rebecca Barron, who accepted the check because Blencowe was at a Scholars Bowl competition, handles the junior varsity team.
Barron said the funds will be used to pay for transportation to competitions and a buzzer system.
Scholars Bowl is a long-established team for CCHS, but the equipment has become outdated. Barron said the buzzer system it has no longer works, so students have been unable to practice in a real competition type setting.
“Last year, our JV team won the district, and the varsity team … is very successful,” Barron said.
Agriscience teacher Marlon Harton received $700 for a lathe and pin kit.
“We will purchase the lathe and the pins,” Harton said. “They will select a pin, whether it be a round barrel pin or the different sizes they have a selection of. It will just teach them the use of a wood lathe, which maybe they can transition to production or something for a metal lathe.”
The equipment will be used in a class designed for high school juniors and seniors.
Harton said the grant demonstrated that “we have a community that looks to help our programs and support our programs consistently.”
The Chilton Education Foundation awards PEECh grant to local teachers on an annual basis.
