The Chilton County Tigers junior varsity team defeated the Maplesville Red Devils 49-21 in the final round of the county tournament on Jan. 6.

The Tigers dominated the Red Devils from the opening possession until the final horn.

“The biggest thing for my guys was not coming out flat so we started pressing them on defense from the first basket,” said Chilton County coach Reginald Jackson.

That defensive pressure caused the Red Devils to turn the ball over on numerous occasions, which led to easy transition points for the Tigers.

When the Red Devils did break the press, they attacked the rim and were able to draw fouls. Most of their points in the first half came at the free throw line with Gage Mims making 4 of his 6 free throws.

On the opposite end, most of the Tigers points came from the field as they took a 23-10 lead into halftime.

There was not much different in the second half. The Tigers outscored the Red Devils 16-4 in the third quarter with two three-pointers from guard Deaunte Childers.

Childers led the Tigers in scoring with 11 points. Dalton Patterson also added in nine points.

“We needed to maintain the momentum after halftime to finish the job, and we did just that,” Jackson said.

Maplesville guard Latrell Wilson led his team with 11 points.

Red Devils coach Brandon Morrow Jr. believed the pressure from the Chilton County defense was a big factor but his team never gave up.

“All I wanted was for my guys to play as hard as they could, we will move on from this and the second half of our season will show,” Morrow Jr. said.
