The Chilton County Board of Education has approved Jason Deason as the second assistant principal for Chilton County High School.

Deason was approved 4 to 3. Board President Lori Patterson and board members Keith Moore, Jim Shannon and Curtis Smith voted in favor. Board members Linda Hand, Joe Mims and Pam Price voted against.

Price reiterated previous concerns that the system was hiring someone from outside the school system while others who applied already work in the school system and have run things when the administrator was absent.

“I have a problem with this,” Price said.

Based on enrollment at CCHS, the school receives state funding for two principals.

The board unanimously approved Ashley Short as a special education teacher at Jemison Elementary, Savannah Diaz as a teacher for Clanton Intermediate, Jennifer Dennis as an elementary teacher for Maplesville High School and John Howard as a science teacher for Maplesville High School.

Justin Veazey was approved as an intervention teacher for Chilton County High School. Price opposed and Shannon abstained.

Also during the meeting, the Board of Education approved:

— Stipends for the Key Clubs.

— Retirement of Benton Morton from Isabella High School.

— Moving forward with feasibility studies for a multipurpose facility at Verbena High School.

— Requesting bids for maintenance projects at multiple schools.
