Art classes are back at the Chilton County Arts Council.

Council member Maria Hosmer is offering art classes for children at the council’s office in downtown Clanton.

The classes meet every Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will focus on the history and elements of art.

“I really want them to learn about the artists, some techniques,” Hosmer said.

She said children interested in art are already creative, but she wants to help them develop techniques and further their schools.

“I think it is important that they know the elements of art,” Hosmer said.

This will be taught with drawing as a focus.

Hosmer said she likes to teach about the art masters in her classes in addition to increasing the student’s artistic talent.

The class is a good opportunity, she said, especially because many local schools do not have an art program.

“I feel like this is my place to be,” She said or offering students the opportunities and knowledge they might not get elsewhere.

The classes are open to students ages 7 to 14.

Hosmer said students love to get art sets as presents, but they often do not know how to use the pastels or acrylics included. She said art classes can help students know how to use each medium correctly.

Hosmer said the classes are a good way for the art council to be involved in the community.

Hosmer has been a part of the Council since shortly after she moved to Chilton County two years ago.

She was one of the art teachers at this year’s summer program at the art council.

“We have a good place to have classes,” Hosmer said.

She said the room had good space for artists to have enough room and good lighting.

While the basic supplies will be provided, Hosmer said each student needs to bring a sketchbook. She said this will allow students to see their progress over time. It also helps students stay organized.

There is a $10 fee per class.  Registration can be completed the day of the class. Hosmer said signing up ahead of time is not required. Students can simply show up.
