Mustangs bounce back with sweep of CCHS

After suffering their first loss of the season on the road at Moody on Saturday, the Isabella Mustangs got back on the winning track Sept. 26 by picking up their 18th win of the season in three sets over the Chilton County Tigers 25-17, 25-11, 25-18.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead in the first set thanks to the serving of Jayda Jones and later saw that lead extend further behind the serving of Sophia Underwood, along with a pair of kills by Jones and Synia Chattman.

With a 16-8 lead, Katelyn Talley led a 3-0 run for Isabella followed by Jones leading a 4-0 run, as the Mustangs held a commanding 23-12 lead.

The Tigers made a late push in the set behind the serving of Amaya White, but a kill by Kasey Grimes gave Isabella a 25-17 win in set one.

Set number two of the match got off to a much more competitive start, as the teams played through a 4-all tie before the Mustangs took command.

Three aces by Grimes aided in an 8-0 Isabella run that put the Mustangs way out in front, 12-4.

The eight-point Isabella lead remained in tact for the remainder of the set and an ace by Elizabeth Alstott brought the set to a close, 25-11 in favor of the Mustangs.

The third and final set of the match leaned towards Chilton County early on as, the Tigers took a 6-5 lead before Carmelina Fjeldstad led a 3-0 Isabella run to put the Mustangs ahead 9-6.

Chilton County managed to cut the lead to one at 11-10, but a 7-0 run by the serving of Alexis Owens and a pair of kills by Chattman gave Isabella a comfortable lead as, the Mustangs went on to close out the match.

Chattman led the Mustangs with 16 kills, one block and two assist, while Grimes added seven aces and 20 assists.

Brianna Connell led the Tigers with nine digs, while White added 14 serve receives.
