The Chilton Auburn Club hosted its annual golf tournament on Aug. 28 at the Timberline Golf Club in Calera.

According to chairperson Tom Powers, the event was a success, bringing in around $5,500 — enough to fund one of the three Auburn scholarships provided by the club each year.

The Chilton Auburn Club is one of the oldest clubs in the Auburn Alumni Association, club president Nyra Luster said.

Luster said the club funds three scholarships amounting to $5,500 each, distributed every year to three incoming Auburn University students from Chilton County.

“The golf tournament is one of our big scholarship fundraisers we have,” Luster said. The club’s second fundraiser is an Unsung Hero banquet.

This year was the first time the Chilton Auburn Club hosted its golf tournament at Timberline Golf Club, according to Luster.

Although two teams had to cancel last-minute, the fundraiser featured competition from eight teams — a total of 32 players, Powers said.

Tournament winners ranked first place to fourth place are Jimmy Hayes, Frank Sledge, Lane Garrett and Mike Gothard.

Luster said prizes included stainless steal mugs, plaques to be attached to the Chilton Auburn Club eagle trophy, $50 gift cards and more. Powers and Luster presented the prizes to winners, and all participants received goodie bags of golf items including a towel, tees, golf bag tags and coupons.

“Two ways we raise money through this tournament is with businesses and individuals donating as a sponsor,” Luster said.

Powers said the tournament had 52 sponsors, “which were a big help,” consisting of various individuals and businesses around the surrounding area.

“We are so proud of our sponsors in our community and statewide for always helping to fund our tournament,” Luster said.

Powers said the Chilton Auburn Club hopes to build the tournament fundraiser “bigger and better every year.”
