Cornerstone Fitness and Wellness in Clanton hosted a back to school bash on Aug. 1 and offered children a summer celebration prior to starting school on Aug. 9.

With less than a week before the beginning of the next school year, Cornerstone childcare manager Taylor Brooke Henderson thought it would be the perfect time for such an event.

“It is a showcase for our gym, but we’re also taking up school supplies to give away to children in need,” Henderson said.

The school supplies collected will be donated to the Chilton County Board of Education and they will disperse them throughout the schools.

“We’re hoping to raise enough school supplies to sponsor at least five children to start back to school,” Henderson said. “We didn’t make people donate to take part, but we recommended it.”

Those attending were able to take part in a water activity course setup outside behind the gym. The activities included four slip-and-slides into kiddy pools and extreme kickball.

This was the first year that the Cornerstone had held the back to school bash. Henderson has plans for it to become an annual event.

She came up with the idea and focused it around both summertime and the start of school.

“I wanted to do something for the kids before they go back to school, but even more importantly I wanted them to know that they can have fun and give back to those who need it,” Henderson said.

Pizza and Popsicles were enjoyed by all those in attendance.
