Thursdays throughout the summer the city of Jemison hosts “Legos in the Library.”

Rachel Mims came up with the idea as a fun summer activity for kids to take part in.

She spent the past year collecting Legos from anyone and any place that she could find them.

The result was buckets and crates full of Legos for kids to search through, as they look for that perfect piece.

The program just wrapped up its third week and it has seen rapid growth during that time.

Despite the name, the activity actually takes place in the Jemison Municipal Complex, which is a good thing because attendance has escalated from 28 the first week to 40 the second week and included even more new faces in week three.

According to Mims, Legos are popular among a wide range of ages and was something that she hoped would bring each child’s creativity to the forefront.

“They don’t realize that they are using creativity, problem solving, hand-eye-coordination, as well as the social aspect,” Mims said.

That imagination was definitely present with the finished products by many of the kids. Their final creations are displayed each week in city hall.

“The kids have looked forward to it from week to week,” said April Teel, grandmother of Aiden and Colin Smitherman. “They want to know why it couldn’t be every day.”

The kids are given a theme each week and attempt to use the Legos to build something to match the theme.

The first week the theme was waterparks, followed by transportation the second week and patriotic/Fourth of July the third week.

Sam Cook likes to think outside the box with his creations. In the three weeks, he has made an icy jail cell, two nuclear-powered vehicles and the American flag waving in the wind.

“I have loved to do Legos for years and years,” Cook said. “I just go with the flow and each time I just try to create something as oddly done as I can. I want to create something unique.”

The final Thursday that the program will be held is July 21, which is a couple of weeks prior to teachers returning to school.
